The Cae Glas Fun night held last Friday evening, 27th July, was a fantastic success, there has been a lot of feedback from the people who attended saying what a great night it was. The event was attended by Cae Glas members, their families and friends. The evening consisted of a Quiz, Bingo, Raffle and Auction, food and drink was also provided. It appears that Bros Jim King and Dean Pritchard, who organised the event, assisted by W.Bro Frank Francis and their respective wives Louise, Helen and Angela, actually improved on last years event, which was some achievement.

Due to all their efforts and the kind generosity of everyone who assisted and attended the total raised for the 2019 Festival was £1371, which was more then last year, amazing.

Cae Glas Lodge would like to thank all those that donated prizes and food for the event.

From the photo it looks like everyone was deep in thought over the Quiz questions, although they were easier than last year.

Around 100 Masons, their wives, partners and guests enjoyed the 2018 Cae Glas Ladies Night at Lion Quays on 10th February.

The WM, Neil Bevan, and his wife Kirsten chose to donate profits from their Ladies’ Night to a local charity – the CRY for Matthew Screening programme for Shropshire and South Cheshire. Currently in the UK over 12 young people a week die from undiagnosed heart defects. Screening reduces the risk of Young Sudden Cardiac Death by 90%. 

Local heart screenings are funded in memory of Matthew Dewhirst – www.cry-for-matthew.org.uk – a local boy who sadly passed away while playing rugby at school in 2012, aged just 17.

The event raised a fantastic £960.00 through a raffle, with a first prize of a Spa Day for two at Lion Quays, ‘Guess the name of the Teddy’ competition run by the WM’s 11-year-old daughter, and W. Bro Lee Ganly and his wife Helen kindly attending to photograph our guests in exchange for a donation to the charity. 

One very kind member of the lodge topped up the total to £1000 and we were delighted when this was match funded by the Province – a donation totalling £2,000 being made to CRY for Matthew!

After the formalities of the evening, guests then danced the night away to a disco. We have had many favourable comments about the venue, the food and the service – so thank you all, Brethren and guests, for coming along and making is such a memorable evening.

CRY provides screenings free of charge for young people aged 14 to 35, which are funded by donations. Cardiac Risk in the Young – CRY – is a small national charity set up to support the screening programme and also to support families and reseach throughout the UK. You can find our more about their work nationally at www.c-r-y.org.uk

The Cae Glas Curry Night – otherwise known as the ‘Fourth Thursday Irregulars’ has become famous on the Shropshire Masonic calendar. Held (surprisingly!) on the fourth Thursday of the months during which we have a regular Lodge meeting, curry night is a chance for Masons to get together informally – and also for non-Masons and men who would like to find out more about becoming a Mason to meet us and find out more. We normally meet at 7pm at the Masonic Hall on Roft Street in Oswestry. Lodge members then go upstairs for the Lodge of Instruction meeting, where we learn more about Masonry and practice parts of the ritual, and guests can stay in the bar downstairs to get to know some of the members. We all meet back downstairs at around 8.30pm and then normally move on to the Simla Indian Restaurant in Oswestry where we have a three course Indian meal for a very reasonable £12 each. Sometimes we stay in the Lodge dining hall and have a fish and chip supper as an alternative to a curry. If you’re interested in finding out more, get in touch!

Cae Glas Lodge ladies night is normally held in February and gives the Brethren and their guests the chance to wine and dine in style – and to thank our wives and partners for their support throughout the Masonic year.

Ladies Night is a black tie function normally held at a local hotel, with a band or disco, and an evening of fun is guaranteed. Non-masons and guests are most welcome to attend Ladies Night as are members of other Lodges both from Oswestry and further afield.

Part of the purpose of Freemasonry is to give ‘relief’ to those in need through charitable giving. As well as the monies raised by Masons themselves at regular Lodge meetings, we hold social events as fundraisers for the Masonic Charities. This is particularly apt when a Province is ‘in Festival’. A ‘Festival’ is a period of time during which the charitable efforts of the Province are devoted to raising a target set by the Provincial Grand Master for a particular charity. The Masonic Province of Shropshire is currently just over two years in to the Festival culminating in 2019 – in aid of the Freemasons Grand Charity – with a target of £1 MILLION set by the Provincial Grand Master.

Events held in aid of the Festival have included a Brass Band Concert, and a highly successful Hog Roast held at one of our members’ homes.
